Believe it or not, roadside giants have been part of American travel culture since the 1880s. The oldest surviving example? Lucy the Elephant was built in 1881 in Margate, New Jersey, to promote local real estate and attract tourists. She still stands six stories tall and remains a roadside legend.
By the 1920s and 30s, giants became popular along highways like the Lincoln Highway and Route 66. One example from that era is the Giant Coffee Pot in Bedford, PA—a piece of novelty architecture designed to lure in travelers with its unmistakable charm.
Others quickly followed — lumberjacks, hot dogs, dinosaurs — all designed to say, “Hey! You! Stop here!”
These giants weren’t just signs—they were memory-makers. Today, they’re a beloved part of quirky American road trips. These roadside giants became landmarks—pieces of accidental art that still dot highways across America.
Why I Brake for Roadside Giants
Maybe it is the marketer in me, but I love these roadside giants. They call out to you to stop and check out whatever business they are next to. They are truly American and make any road trip a little better.
They’re big, unapologetically quirky, and often deeply local. They usually have a pretty epic backstory too.
Plus, there’s something joyful about seeing a giant ear of corn in a field or a massive rooster by the side of the road. You can’t help but smile—and that’s the whole point.
Make It Part of the Journey
Here’s the thing: roadside giants are usually not the destination. They’re the unexpected joy you find on the way to somewhere else. But sometimes? They’re what you remember most.
